Meet China’s lost pet detectives

In China, pet ownership has risen sharply in recent years with more than 68 million people owning a cat or dog in 2021. Many of these animals are considered another member of the family. The pet trend has led to the birth of a new ‘pet detective’ industry aimed at not only helping find lost animals, but also teaching new owners about their pets and how to look after them. The BBC’s Shanghai team followed one pet detective as he went about searching for a missing cat. BBC

The Belt and Road Initiative has been China’s main branding strategy for its foreign policy over the past decade, and it was systematically and frenetically associated with Xi Jinping. But actually, Xi has been among the leaders who have…

Xiao Qian on Tuesday night also offered to help detained Australian journalist Cheng Lei contact her family. In August, Xiao told the National Press Club that after a “good start” with the newly elected Albanese government “there is an opportunity for a possible reset of the relationship” between China and Australia. Since Labor’s election in May, the defence minister, Richard Marles, and the foreign minister, Penny…

Battling Violence and Censors, Women in China Become ‘Invisible and Absent’

HONG KONG — When a prominent woman in China’s #MeToo movement took on a powerful man in court, it was the accused, not the accuser, who was held up as the victim. When several women were savagely beaten by men after resisting unwanted advances in a restaurant, the focus of the story pivoted from gender violence to gang violence. And when a mother of eight was found chained to the wall of a doorless shack, it was her mental fitness — not her imprisonment — that became the talking point.…
