China’s ‘two sessions’ 2024: what Foreign Minister Wang Yi had to say about US relations, Taiwan and wars in Ukraine and Gaza

Although he said relations have improved since the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his American counterpart Joe Biden in California last year, Washington’s misperceptions about China still linger and its promises have not been fulfilled. “The US has been devising various tactics to suppress China,” he said. “If the US says one thing and does another, where is its credibility as a major country? If it gets jittery whenever it hears the word China, where is its confidence as a major country?” He also responded to recent comments…

A leading Chinese academic has called for more access to non-sensitive scientific data such as meteorological information to support research and development. Taiwan Apologizes for Labor Minister’s Remarks on Indian Workers

New Delhi —  Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry has issued “sincere apologies” following a remark by Taiwan’s labor minister that has threatened to disrupt fast-warming ties between the island republic and India. In an interview with Yahoo TV last week, Hsu Ming-chun, Taiwan’s minister of labor, said that Taiwan may start recruiting migrant workers from India’s northeast region because “their skin color and eating habits are similar to ours.” She added that “most of them believe in Christianity, and [have] skills in manufacturing, construction and agriculture.” Critics on social media called the…

The Lehman liquidators taking on China’s Evergrande

When Eddie Middleton and Tiffany Wong worked on the liquidation of Lehman Brothers’ vast Asian operations, it must have seemed like the largest and most complicated task they would ever take on. Fifteen years later, China Evergrande, the world’s most indebted property developer, has collapsed — and they are handling the wreckage. The pair, from US firm Alvarez & Marsal, have already started making preparations for a possible lawsuit against PwC, Evergrande’s former auditor, after a judge appointed them as liquidators of Evergrande’s Hong Kong-listed holding company. Still they face…

Vietnam labels 2 foreign-based groups ‘terrorist organizations’

Vietnam has accused two foreign-based political groups of being “terrorist organizations” that helped plan an attack in Vietnam’s Central Highlands last June leaving nine people dead. The country’s Ministry of Public Security identified them as the United States-based Montagnard Support Group Inc. (MSGI) and Montagnard Stand for Justice (MSFJ), which was formed in Thailand in 2017 and began operating in the U.S. two years later. Montagnards are a mainly-Protestant ethnic minority that live in Vietnam’s Central Highlands. MSGI and MSFJ have campaigned for their rights, claiming they struggle to receive…

Margins wane for banks in south-east Asia as US interest rate cuts loom

Banks in the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations may be seeing the last of beefy earnings from loans in the current higher financing era as lower interest rates loom. The US Federal Reserve has signalled rate cuts in the coming months on lower inflation worries, gradually making money cheaper to borrow. For the Asean’s biggest banks, most of which are based in Singapore, growth in income from loans could slow over the coming months. “It is inevitable that this environment will change,” said Kavan Choksi, wealth consultant at corporate…
